Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Asmaa, president of the Lalla Asmaa Foundation, inaugurated Lalla Asmaa University in Rabat on Thursday, October 15, 2026, an institution devoted to training, research and the inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing students follow the same programmes there; the Foundation presents it as the world's first inclusive university. After the inauguration, the Princess toured the laboratories and workshops and met the teaching staff.

According to the Foundation, the university has four schools — hearing sciences and clinical neuroscience; sign languages and accessibility; technology and digital creation; trades and vocational training — 16 diplomas, from vocational certificates to master's degrees, and room for 3,500 students. Courses include audiology, speech therapy, sign-language interpreting, artificial intelligence and digital design, as well as cooking and pastry. The hearing-sciences track is free, and a specialised diploma in cochlear implantation is aimed at ENT surgeons. Seven laboratories complete the campus, among them a motion-capture lab documenting Moroccan Sign Language and an ENT surgery simulation lab. A boarding facility is due to open in 2027 for students from Morocco and abroad.

Five agreements were signed at the ceremony: with the IHU reConnect hospital-university institute in Paris, the University of Montpellier, Belgian university and hospital institutions (Louvain and Brussels), Mohammed V University in Rabat and the national broadcaster SNRT. They cover research and training in hearing, cochlear implants, sign language and accessible media, and add to an earlier agreement with a university institution in Chicago on applied behaviour analysis. The university is also to train staff in government offices, banks, hotels and stadiums to welcome deaf and hard-of-hearing people, ahead of the 2030 World Cup. The same day, the Princess visited the National Rehabilitation and Neuroscience Centre in Rabat, meeting children from Morocco and Panama who had just received cochlear implants; according to the Foundation, more than 1,100 Moroccans have received one free of charge.
