By our calculation, Eid al-Fitr 1448 should fall on Wednesday, March 10, 2027 in Morocco, after a Ramadan of 30 days. The date will be announced by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs after the crescent is looked for, on the evening of Monday, March 8, 2027.
Dates from our crescent-visibility calculation, explained below. In Morocco only the announcement by the Ministry of Habous counts.
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, the month that follows Ramadan. In Morocco it is not fixed in advance: the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs announces it on the evening of 29 Ramadan, after the crescent is looked for. If the crescent is seen, Eid is the next day; if not, Ramadan runs to thirty days and Eid falls the day after.
So the date is only certain one or two days ahead, and Morocco sometimes celebrates Eid a day after countries that rely on astronomical calculation.
The Shawwal crescent will be looked for on the evening of Monday, March 8, 2027, the 29th of Ramadan. That evening the crescent will be 9 hours old at sunset and should not be visible to the naked eye. Ramadan would therefore run to thirty days and Shawwal would begin on Wednesday, March 10, 2027.
The Saudi Umm al-Qura calendar, computed in advance, puts Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, March 9, 2027: by our calculation, Morocco would be one day later.
Our calculation: for each sighting evening we compute whether the crescent can be seen with the naked eye from seven cities across the Kingdom, from Tangier to Dakhla (Odeh's visibility criterion). Of the 45 month starts announced in Morocco since February 2023, the calculation was clear-cut 35 times and the announcement followed it 35 times out of 35; the other 10 evenings were too close to call in advance. It remains a forecast: in Morocco only the announcement by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs counts.
In public administrations Eid al-Fitr is two days off, 1 and 2 Shawwal: on the expected date, Wednesday, March 10 and Thursday, March 11, 2027. Friday, March 12 remains a working day on its own between the holiday and the weekend.
In the private sector Eid al-Fitr is on the list of paid holidays (decree no. 2-04-426, issued under article 217 of the Labour Code). An employee who works that day receives, on top of the wage, an allowance of the same amount (article 224); by mutual agreement it can be replaced by paid compensatory rest (article 225).
Several times in recent years, state administrations and local authorities have been given an exceptional day off around Eid al-Fitr, under decree no. 2-05-916: Friday, June 7, 2019 and Friday, April 12, 2024, when Eid fell on a Wednesday; Monday, April 24, 2023 and Monday, March 23, 2026, when it fell on a Saturday or a Friday. In 2024 and 2026 banks closed on the same day. The decision is announced a few days before the holiday; nothing has been announced for 2027. On the expected date, Friday, March 12 is the lone working day between Eid and the weekend, in the same position as Friday, April 12, 2024.
Zakat al-Fitr is the alms due before the Eid prayer. The amount is set each year by the Supreme Council of Ulema: 25 dirhams per person in 2026. The 2027 amount will be announced during Ramadan.
The Eid prayer is held in the morning, after sunrise, in open-air prayer grounds (musallas) and in mosques. The time varies from one city to another: ask at your mosque. As a guide, on March 10 the sun will rise at 06:48 in Casablanca, 06:45 in Rabat, 06:38 in Fez, 06:49 in Marrakech, 06:42 in Tangier, 06:55 in Agadir, 06:40 in Meknes and 06:26 in Oujda (calculated times).
Eid al-Fitr is one of the occasions on which the King grants a pardon: 1,201 people benefited in 2026, according to the Ministry of Justice.
