By our calculation, Eid al-Mawlid 1449, the Prophet's birthday, should fall on Sunday, August 15, 2027 in Morocco. The date will be known about twelve days ahead: the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs announces the start of Rabi al-Awwal after the crescent is looked for, on the evening of Monday, August 2 or Tuesday, August 3, 2027.
Dates from our crescent-visibility calculation, explained below. In Morocco only the announcement by the Ministry of Habous counts.
Eid al-Mawlid — "Aïd Al Mawlid Annabaoui" in official statements, "Mouloud" in everyday speech — marks the birth of the Prophet, on 12 Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Hijri year. In Morocco it is the start of the month that the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs announces, after the crescent is looked for on the evening of 29 Safar: if the crescent is seen, Rabi al-Awwal begins the next day; if not, the day after. Mawlid is the twelfth day.
The statement that announces the start of the month gives the date of Mawlid at the same time, so it is known about twelve days in advance.
The Rabi al-Awwal crescent will be looked for on the evening of the 29th of Safar: Monday, August 2 or Tuesday, August 3, 2027, depending on the day Safar begins. On the evening of August 2 the crescent will be 9 hours old at sunset and should not be visible to the naked eye. On the evening of August 3 the crescent will be 33 hours old at sunset and should be easy to see with the naked eye. Both cases lead to the same date: Rabi al-Awwal would begin on Wednesday, August 4, 2027. Mawlid, on 12 Rabi al-Awwal, would then fall on Sunday, August 15, 2027.
The Saudi Umm al-Qura calendar, computed in advance, puts 12 Rabi al-Awwal on Saturday, August 14, 2027: by our calculation, Morocco would be one day later.
Our calculation: for each sighting evening we compute whether the crescent can be seen with the naked eye from seven cities across the Kingdom, from Tangier to Dakhla (Odeh's visibility criterion). Of the 45 month starts announced in Morocco since February 2023, the calculation was clear-cut 35 times and the announcement followed it 35 times out of 35; the other 10 evenings were too close to call in advance. It remains a forecast: in Morocco only the announcement by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs counts.
In public administrations, public establishments and concession-run services, Mawlid is two days off, 12 and 13 Rabi al-Awwal (decree no. 2-77-169 of February 28, 1977, amended by decree no. 2-00-166 of May 10, 2000): on the expected date, Sunday, August 15 and Monday, August 16, 2027. Sunday, August 15 falls on a weekend. With the weekend that makes three days off in a row, August 14–16, 2027, for people who do not work on Saturday and Sunday.
In the private sector Mawlid is on the list of paid holidays (decree no. 2-04-426, issued under article 217 of the Labour Code), which provides for no second day: the day after is a day off only if a collective agreement or the employer grants it. An employee who works on the day of Mawlid receives, on top of the wage, an allowance of the same amount (article 224); by mutual agreement it can be replaced by paid compensatory rest (article 225).
Around these dates the calendar also has Saturday, August 14 (Oued Eddahab Allegiance Day), Friday, August 20 (Revolution of the King and People) and Saturday, August 21 (Youth Day).
Mawlid marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. In Morocco it was made an official celebration in 1292, under the Marinid sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf. It is marked by readings of the Quran in mosques, recitation of the Burda, al-Busiri's poem in praise of the Prophet, and evening gatherings in the zawiyas.
In September 2025 the King sent the Higher Council of Ulema a letter, read out in Rabat on September 15, calling for the fifteen centuries since the Prophet's birth to be commemorated with lectures and scholarly activities.
On the eve of Mawlid, 11 Rabi al-Awwal (on the expected date, Saturday, August 14, 2027), the King, Commander of the Faithful, presides over a religious evening. In 2025 it was held on Thursday, September 4 at the Hassan Mosque in Rabat, where the Mohammed VI prizes were awarded (Islamic thought and studies, memorisation and recitation of the Quran, Moroccan calligraphy); in 2026 it was announced for Monday, August 24 at the Royal Palace in Rabat. On the same day, in Salé, the Hassouniya zawiya holds the candle procession, a tradition going back to the 16th century: the procession crosses the medina to the mausoleum of Moulay Abdellah Ben Hassoun.
Mawlid is one of the occasions on which the King grants a pardon: 634 people benefited in 2026, according to the Ministry of Justice.
Mawlid falls during the summer holidays: pupils are not in class at that time.
Dates as announced by the Ministry of Habous. The last row is a forecast.

On the evening of Monday, August 2 or Tuesday, August 3, 2027, which will be 29 Safar: that evening the Ministry of Habous announces the start of Rabi al-Awwal and, in the same statement, the date of Mawlid, the twelfth day of the month.
Two days in public administrations, 12 and 13 Rabi al-Awwal: on the expected date, Sunday, August 15 and Monday, August 16, 2027. Sunday, August 15 falls on a weekend. With the weekend that makes three days off in a row, August 14–16, 2027, for people who do not work on Saturday and Sunday.
