August 25: Morocco Celebrates Mawlid an-Nabawi

🕌🇲🇦 National holiday: Morocco celebrates Mawlid an-Nabawi on August 25, commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the 12th of Rabia al-Awal. A day marked by recitations, prayers, and family gatherings across the Kingdom. #Morocco #Mawlid

Morocco celebrates Mawlid an-Nabawi on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a national holiday commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which falls on the 12th of Rabia al-Awal in the Hijri calendar. The date was set after Morocco's Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs confirmed the crescent moon sighting marking the start of Rabia al-Awal 1448 on August 14.

Across the Kingdom, the celebration takes the form of Quran recitations, religious gatherings (hawliyat and hadras at zaouias), congregational prayers at mosques, as well as family gatherings and charitable acts. Zaouias, the spiritual centers of Sufi brotherhoods, welcome thousands of disciples for evenings of dhikr and samaa in honor of the Prophet; certain orders, such as the Tijanis and Qadiris, maintain their own mystical rituals for the occasion. Groups performing madih (praise chants for the Prophet) travel through neighborhoods or gather in mosques, a tradition especially alive in Marrakech and Tétouan, where musical evenings mark the night of the Mawlid.

In several cities, illuminations and decorations mark the occasion from the eve onward. Beyond its festive dimension, the Mawlid is also an occasion to recall the Sira, the Prophet's biography, and the values it conveys — a major date on Morocco's religious calendar, rooted in a tradition of popular piety spanning centuries.

Public administrations and the private sector observe this public holiday, continuing religious traditions deeply rooted in Moroccan social life.
