Moroccan Sahara: Colombia Recognizes Morocco's Sovereignty, Withdraws Recognition of Separatist "SADR"

🤝🇲🇦 Another diplomatic win: Colombia recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara and withdraws recognition of the self-styled "SADR." Morocco becomes Colombia's "top ally" in Africa, per VP Restrepo. #Morocco #MoroccanSahara #Diplomacy

Colombia announced, Friday August 8, a shift in its position on the Moroccan Sahara issue: during talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Colombian Vice President José Manuel Restrepo, and Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar, Bogotá stated it "recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara." Restrepo called the announcement "a new beginning" in bilateral relations, describing the Kingdom as "Colombia's foremost ally in Africa."

Bourita described the decision as "historic": it marks not only recognition of Moroccan sovereignty, but also Colombia's withdrawal of recognition of the self-styled "SADR." He pointed to the potential for reciprocal economic platforms between the two countries, drawing on their respective positions in Africa and Latin America.

The announcement follows the momentum of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted October 31, 2025, which enshrines Morocco's 2007 autonomy plan as the basis for resolving the dispute, and joins a growing list of countries that have recognized Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces.
