August 14: Morocco Marks Oued Eddahab Allegiance Day

🤝🇲🇦 National holiday: Morocco marks Oued Eddahab Allegiance Day on August 14, commemorating the 1979 return of this Moroccan Sahara province to the Kingdom, sealed by local tribes' oath of allegiance to the King. #Morocco #OuedEddahab #MoroccanSahara

Morocco marks Oued Eddahab Allegiance Day every August 14, a national holiday commemorating one of the key milestones in the completion of the Kingdom's territorial integrity. On August 14, 1979, a delegation of notables and tribal representatives from Oued Eddahab solemnly renewed their oath of allegiance (Bay'ah) to King Hassan II, sealing this southern province of the Moroccan Sahara's definitive attachment to the Kingdom.

Carried by 360 representatives of the region, this allegiance closed a sensitive chapter in the history of the Moroccan Sahara and confirmed local populations' unwavering loyalty to the Alaouite Throne. It follows on from the territorial-integrity process begun with the 1975 Green March, and is regularly cited by Moroccan authorities as a founding milestone of national unity around the Moroccan Sahara.

Administratively, the Oued Eddahab province today forms, with Dakhla as its capital, the heart of the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region, the Kingdom's southernmost region. Nearly five decades later, the date is still marked across the Kingdom with ceremonies and cultural events honoring the loyalty of Oued Eddahab's residents and national unity.
